The Pain of Fibromyalgia
When I ask my patients to describe their pain, they often tell me that they feel like they have been run over by a Mack truck. I tell them that I can’t understand this – that those people are all dead. So, how do we assess the level of someone else’s pain that we’ve never experienced? Continue reading
The War Against Pollution
American President Barack Obama is trying to improve air quality and reduce global warming, and is feeling the heat. He wants to reduce the use of coal as an energy source. Archibishop Desmond Tutu recently had a helicopter tour above the oil sands region north of Fort McMurray. He expressed his concern about the environmental effects of the Alberta oil sands project and received a backlash from industry. Musician Neil Young has toured the same area. He has continued to speak out against the Alberta oil sands as well, and has been accused of ignorance, and of being insulting. Continue reading
Allergy vs Sensitivity
On May 12th, I was interviewed on CJAD radio in Montreal on the Tommy Schnurmacher show. The topic was the effect of the polluted environment on health and why women are more afflicted with environmentally related illnesses than men. There was a phone in segment for people to call in questions. The last caller was scornful. He told me that he had allergies during childhood, had received allergy shots, was no longer allergic, and insisted that he would continue to use deodorant. I could only respond to the latter point, that it was his personal choice to apply chemicals to his body, because we had run out of program time. Continue reading

Probably the most famous person with this disease is Michael J Fox, who starred on television in the Family Ties series and in the Back To The Future movies. To his credit, he started the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, which has funded $450 million in research for Parkinson’s disease in the past 14 years. Continue reading
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly News About ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome)
In my practice I see patients with chronic fatigue syndrome every day. They have chronic physical and mental fatigue, which gets worse when they exert themselves, and it takes longer than normal to recover. Continue reading
Climate Change and Our Health
No one doubts that our air is more polluted than it was 60 years ago and that mankind is responsible. The people who argue that global warming is not a result of human activities are on the side of free enterprise. They cling to information supplied by a few scientists who provide them with the justification for allowing toxic chemicals to pollute our environment. Continue reading
Play the Odds – Lower Risks for Newborns
In my first post, I wrote about a pattern that my colleagues and I have recognized in our patients with environmentally linked illnesses. Over the years we have been seeing more children with that pattern which is either not being … Continue reading
Common Scents Marketing
Last week, my wife was out with my sister, browsing in stores, doing a bit of shopping. Some stores had odours that were strong enough to make her eyes burn and she walked out right away. My sister didn’t feel a thing. My wife has a mild case of multiple chemical sensitivities and her symptoms range from burning eyes, nausea, and migraine depending on the offending chemicals. At one of the stores that she went into, the smell was so strong that she asked if they were burning incense. The saleswoman told her that the scents are in the air conditioning system. Continue reading
